Interview with Finnair MD-11 pilots

As I wrote in my previous blog post, I sometimes write letters to the cockpit crew en route to ask random questions about the aviation. Few weeks ago, I was once again hopping from Helsinki back to New York, on board of my favorite jet, the good old MD-11. Since Finnair is gradually replacing these glorious planes with new Airbus jets, I felt it would be appropriate to ask the pilots how they feel about this change. 

So here is my mid-air interview with the pilots. The interview was done in Finnish language using this weird letter exchange method. The pilot answering the questions granded a permission to publish the interview but asked to remain anonymous.


Greetings! During the last few years, I’ve been fortunate to get MD-11 ride quite frequently, and today I’m again returning to the home in New York.

I’m a big fan of MD-11 jet, and I have hobby of following aviation related things such as commercial aviation business. This flight may be one of the last ones with MD-11 (not knowing exactly when Finnair replaces MD-11s in Helsinki-New York route).

So I thought to ask what are your feelings now in the end of MD-11 era; to give a small interview. I understand if you are busy there in front, but I’d be grateful to hear your thoughts.

Myself: How does it feel? MD-11 is one of those historically important passenger jets, although a bit unknown to the great public compared to the Boeing 747. 

Pilot: McDonnell had good engineers but lousy sales guys. The sales numbers were rather low with these good and powerful jets (couple of hundreds). Cargo companies are now trying to acquire every piece they can. Back then, Finnair made a good choice.

M: How is the MD-11 to fly compared to, for example, the Airbus 340? 

P: Every Airbus feels the same to fly. First Officer has flown a small Airbus. He thinks in a high wind situation the yoke is good (not the side stick). I think this is a grand plane to fly. Go steadily as a train, partially thanks to the tail engine. Landing requires bit special technique. When executing a flare, right above surface you need to reduce the nose-up attitude. 

M: What kind of thoughts the engine number two (tail) brings? The tri-engines are rather rare nowadays. Do you note its existence during a flight? 

P: It is an excellent stabilator having a tremendous gyro power. No much tail shakes in landings. In the planes with wing engines, changing the thurst causes trimming needs, but the tail engine compensates that automatically. 

M: What is the thing about MD-11s you will remember? 

P: Very spacious cockpit. Lot’s of power. Carries plenty of cargo and passengers; far and fast. And isn’t it a one good looking piece of machine. 

M: What is your strangest event in MD-11 flights? 

P: Landing in the side wind of 35 knots at Nagoya, when many other airlines with other plane types were forced to divert to the alternative airports.

A British Airtours 737 airrcaft suffered an uncontained engine failure while preparing for take-off at Manchester Airport back in 1985 the result was catastrophic and deadly. Thank goodness the Qantas jet didn't suffer a similiar fate.I felt sorry for the passengers who had to circle for an hour and a half while the pilots dumped enough fuel to land safely. The crew must have been amazing, as I didn't read any reports on passengers panicking.

The seat in that photo looks amazing and makes me to want to try it. I hope I will have the psitibslioy to try Air New Zealand and their seats as well. Comfort is important especially in long flights and that is one important thing that the air carriers can offer.But there are many ways how I can make my flying experience more comfortable myself. I find entertaining myself with my own computer/tablet/phone etc. in a plane more ecological and convenient than readymade gadgets in a plane. Gadgets and demands change continuously and airlines have to renew their plains with a lot of money. I always have at least some kinds of equipments already with me when I fly and books and magazines (also in paper) still exist. I have tried watching a TV-program from my iPad in a plane (the passengers were allowed to do that then) but the Wi-Fi access was still too bad for that. I have a TV set at home but I watch TV-programs often from my computer or iPad – it is so convenient. I can choose what I want to watch and when. I have my individual TV entertaining me and I can even do some useful things with those gadgets and their apps and most of them I can use in a plane too.See my application

I take vitamin D pills and I try my best to soothe myself by listening to soft music, breathing in and out, journaling my thoughts and feelings and even talking to my psychiatrist. On days whenn the weather is nicer, I am always doing my best to stay physically active and break a sweat haven't been able to do so cause it won't stop raining. I feel imprisoned because of thie shitty weather and no Sun.I have tried antidepressants and even anti-psychotics before in the past, but I had a habit of drinking on the weekends and sometimes partying, so it never fully helped me. I learned from my past mistakes and I am sober now and have been for a while, not planning on going back to those bad habits.I want to go back on medication (I am not seeing my Doc for another 2 weeks). There are so many out there and I hear that some medications dont actually help you, they just mask your symptoms. I wish I knew which ones are the best and safe ones, that won't damage my THRYROID and LIVER/Kidneys it really friggin sucks. When you feel a bit depressed, what do you do? How can I make myself feel better cause I feel very glum and I get anxious and just mixed amount of emotions. My mind is overactive and often find it hard to quiet it down. Especially if I am feeling troubled at night when trying to sleep.I am asking nicely for some advice on how to comfortably get through this without letting it hurt me too much. Since I am not on any meds, what can i do in the meantime?If you are on meds or are not, what do you do to make yourself feel better and heal?I just don't feel happy and I easily get miserable and sad, feeling sorry for myself that this is happening to me. Maybe I am experiencing ups and downs because I am still recovering from a past of drinking, late nights, and partying, I dont know. But at least on I am free that poison and if I do go back on meds, It will work more effectively. I also let my bf go, of 3 years for the sake of my well being (mental, physical and emotional health) to recover. The relationship had to end because if I didn't end it the destructive cycle would never end. Almost every night I would cry feeling guilty and/or missing him, but I know I made the best decision to save my life. Letting go can be painful and not easy. Maybe this could be affecting my mental health? Or it is a combination of everything The thing is, do we REALLY need antidepressants/psychotics to heal us? I truly dont think I was born Bi-polar. I got that diagnosis as a result of smoking weed and drinking (and experimenting with Concaine) in my teenage years. I really wonder if I should believe what some say about <a href="">helaing</a> naturally (like my Dad would tell me) or that I am damaged goods and need to repair with medication. This is so confusing. And I don't want to be dependant on those kind of meds for the rest of my life. Also I must mention that I don't socialize much and maybe I need more social interaction to uplift my spirits. My ex bf was like my best friend and now I have nobody.
